Over-development is a concern to all of us

Overall, Australians want more green space and safer, well-maintained public spaces, according to the 2021 Australian Liveability Census. Residents on the Mid-North Coast – and specifically Port Macquarie-Hastings LGA – are no different. A number of reports and surveys over the last 20 years have consistently found that a core community value of the region was green space and “village character”.

We believe that development in our area needs to embrace these values of village character – not dense housing on tiny lots without adequate parking, creating hot microclimates and potentially long-term social problems. We believe we need well planned development, which

  • includes more public parkland;
  • takes into account infrastructure and traffic;
  • preserves environmentally sensitive areas; and
  • is sensitive to the needs of existing residents.

There is currently a proposal being developed to go to Council that would change the zoning of a rural/primary production parcel of land to the north of Forest Parkway in Lake Cathie.  The proposal includes housing for 700 residents, as well as an area designated for “mixed use” (a mixed use zone provides for commercial/ retail and residential). The residential areas include freestanding houses, as well as “multi-dwelling and residential flat buildings”.

The proposal also includes linked roads through an environmentally sensitive area.
